In what can only be described as a mammoth undertaking, more than 400 artworks, ranging from a simple DVD to an installation the size of a car yard, are being moved quietly and brilliantly toward Sydney for this year's extraordinary 17th Biennale of Sydney.

What do we mean when we talk about abstract art? The most comfortable notion might be that nothing on the canvas — or paper — is immediately identifiable. The lines and shapes are entirely unfamiliar to us and, try as we might, we cannot trace them or place them in the context of images and scenes already known to us. According to festival organisers, record crowds have enjoyed the City of Sydney’s 2009 Art & About, cementing it as Sydney’s biggest annual public arts festival.
